The Bureau of Land Management has issued a proposed Decision for a wildlife water development in Dry Canyon near Hawthorne in Mineral County.

The project would capture water from an existing spring, install a spring box and roughly 1,550 feet of buried pipeline, and feed four 2,000-gallon storage tanks connected to a standard NDOW-style guzzler. A small wildlife-friendly fence would enclose about half an acre around the tanks and drinker.

The goal is year-round water in upland habitat so desert bighorn sheep are less likely to move toward U.S. 95 and Walker Lake. Documents are available on the BLM NEPA Register under the listed project number.

The site lies within the broader Mineral County corridor that Gabbs residents and travelers use regularly. No construction start date was given in the announcement.

This account follows the official BLM Stillwater Field Office release dated Oct. 16, 2026. Final approval, design details and any seasonal restrictions should be confirmed via the ePlanning page or by contacting the listed wildlife biologist, as proposed decisions can be modified.
